West Ham’s record in 2021 is one of the best in the club’s history, with David Moyes overseeing a continuation of the progress he made at the club upon his return to east London at the end of 2019.

It began with a late 1-0 victory at Goodison Park on New Year’s Day, with Tomas Soucek slotting home the winner against Everton. West Ham followed that up with two more 1-0 victories during a run of six consecutive wins in all competitions.

That running run at the beginning of the year was ended by Liverpool, who took all three points in a Premier League clash at London Stadium at the end of January.

By then, the Hammers were serious top-four contenders in the Premier League but saw their hopes of reaching the sixth-round of the FA Cup ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

David Moyes’ side entered March in 4th place but failed to put together a run of consistent results to consolidate their position.

Wins over Leeds United, Wolves and Leicester City gave the Hammers a huge opportunity to qualify for the Champions League for the first-ever time but, back-to-back defeats to Newcastle and Chelsea in April ultimately gave them a mountain to climb.

However, they ended the 2020/2021 season with a draw and two wins to guarantee a sixth-placed finish and spot in the Europa League group stages for the first-ever time. It was the club’s first top-six finish since they finished 5th in the 1998/1999 season under Harry Redknapp.

The arrival of Jesse Lingard on loan from Man United in the January transfer window went on to be an inspired piece of business, with the midfielder scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances during the second-half of the season.

With Europa League group stage football to contend with, coupled with the return of fans to stadiums following the Covid-19 pandemic, many questioned whether the Hammers could start 2021/2022 in the same top form.

But Moyes and his players put those doubts to bed immediately with a 4-2 thumping of Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on the opening day of the new season before thrashing Leicester City 4-1 at London Stadium a week later.

The arrival of Europa League football failed to halt the David Moyes train, as West Ham sailed through their group and qualified for a place in the last-16 with a game to spare, overcoming Europa League regulars Rapid Wien, Dinamo Zagreb and KRC Genk in the process.

In the Carabao Cup, West Ham dispatched Man United 1-0 at Old Trafford and then Man City on penalties at London Stadium to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in December.

However, in the Premier League the Hammers saw their good form halted with defeats to the likes of Wolves, Man City, Arsenal Southampton, as well as disappointing draws with Brighton and Burnley.

West Ham crashed out of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals via a narrow 2-1 defeat at Tottenham but did end the calendar year on a high with a thumping 4-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road.
